The Effects of Smartphones on Our Everyday Lives

2013-10-14     원대신문

One of the most sensational inventions today is a smartphone. An online survey done by Korea Communications Commission reported that about sixty percent of Koreans use smartphones and more and more non-smartphone users will be expected to turn into Smartphone users. At first, cellphones were mainly used for calling and texting, however in the last few years smartphones have completely revolutionized the purpose of cellphones.

The emergence of smartphone has enabled our lives to become convenient and faster. By being able to be connected to the internet without computers, we save our precious time and space. We can search for any information from any location without being restrained to a computer. In addition, there are many useful applications such as maps, whether, and social networking. We can also use electronic financial services within our smartphones instead of going to the bank ourselves, which saves us more time in our busy lives.

However, smartphones are a two-edge sword  because they also come with some negative consequences. People have become addicted to their smartphones, and instead of becoming more efficient, the smartphones have become a distraction.

One of the negative effects of smartphones is that people can easily become addicted to their phones. According to statistics by Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education published in May 2013, about 10 percent of high school students on average spend more than two and a half hours a day on their smartphones. This number is expected to increase dramatically over the next years. It has now become common for us to see people on their smartphones while communing, eating, or any place without having any conversations. Smartphone users are stuck in a black hole that they can't seem to get out of.

In conclusion, smartphones have made our lives easier because of the variety of things it can do. On the other hand, having so much in a device has made people not be able to focus on their work. When we use smartphones, we have to use it carefully not to  get caught up with its attraction. Children should also be taught how to be responsible with their smartphones.
