How Do We Have To Spend Our Youth?

2013-11-30     원대신문

During the period of Japanese occupation, there was a highly respected family that consisted of 5 brothers. In addition, the family had a huge amount of money beyond our expectation, which is considered 60 billion won now, and vast land in Myungdong. As long as they maintained their money and land without 'abnormal' deeds, it was possible for the family to hand down their fortunes to their generations. However, they did not choose the wrong way of history.
First of all, they sold their properties and real estates for supporting the Force of Independence in Manchuria, and building some military schools needed to foster soldiers and officers fighting in the battlefield. Also, their fund was used to construct elementary school for nurturing students struggling for the enlightenment of the People in the peninsula. In the process, some of family members were dying of malnutrition and starvation, and caught in charge with independence movement by Japanese police. However, they did not give up griping torch of hope that could, someday when they might not see, burn brightest. Like their sacrifice, our liberation was not achieved at once. The name of the family is 'Lee-Hoe-Young family'. A member, Lee-si-young, the first vice-president of Republic of Korea, was the only survivor from the independence struggle.
At 1960s, a male student of high school was sitting in the chair, studying for his better future and dream in Masan. But, an unprecedented rigged election at that time, so called '3.15 rigged election', changed the direction of his life. Rushing into streets with his friends, he shouted the slogan, 'step down, Lee-Seung-Man'. However, he was attacked by the martial law army and a tear gas was embedded in his face, and in turn, his body showed up on the surface of water a few days later. Demonstration continued to expand like fire and declaration of the state of affairs from top-notch universities supported that passion. So, the 4.19 Democratic Revolution, stirred up by his sacrifice and with our sincerity to our democracy, can be written in our history textbook and taught to our children.
What about our times? What about our youth? We should rethink our existence in our country. As the hope and ideal they embraced in their hearts are in our hand as freedom, democracy, nation and happiness, we have to do all we can for our future generation.
